Spain has become one of the more popular Dubai-to-Europe moves of the last few years, largely thanks to the Digital Nomad Visa opening the door to remote workers who don’t need a Spanish employer at all. Add in the climate, the food, and a genuinely lower cost of living than most of Western Europe, and it’s easy to see the appeal.
Sparkle Relocations ships households from Dubai to Madrid, Barcelona, and the Costa del Sol through our international relocation services. Spain’s visa system has a few quirks worth knowing before you commit to a moving date — we’ll walk through the main ones below.

Spain sells itself on lifestyle — over 2,700 hours of sunshine a year in Madrid, closer to 3,000 in Seville, a genuine café culture, and beaches within easy reach of most major cities. It’s also noticeably more affordable than France, the UK, or the Netherlands for the same standard of living.
The catch is that Spain doesn’t make it especially easy to just show up and work for a Spanish company without sponsorship. Most non-EU movers arrive through the Digital Nomad Visa (for remote workers) or a standard work visa tied to a Spanish employer.
As of 2026, the Digital Nomad Visa requires proof of income around €2,850 a month for a single applicant, working remotely for a company based outside Spain (or freelancing with no more than 20% Spanish clients). It’s valid for up to a year initially, extendable to five years, with a route to permanent residency after that.
The Non-Lucrative Visa suits those with passive income or savings rather than active work — it requires roughly €2,400 a month in passive income, but doesn’t permit local employment. For standard employment with a Spanish company, a conventional work visa applies instead, tied to a job offer.
for remote workers, income floor around €2,850/month, valid up to 1 year initially (5 years total with renewals).
for those with passive income who won't work locally, income floor around €2,400/month.
for employment with a Spanish company, employer-sponsored.
a flat 24% tax election for qualifying new arrivals, applied for within six months of starting eligible work.
around €80 for most long-stay categories, with 20–45 business days processing.
Madrid and Barcelona sit at the higher end of the Spanish market, but even there, costs run well below London or Paris. A single person can live comfortably in most mid-sized Spanish cities on roughly €1,600–€1,900 a month including rent, and considerably less outside the two big cities.
One thing worth knowing before you sign a lease: Catalonia closed a popular mid-term rental loophole at the start of 2026, so if you’re heading to Barcelona, standard long-term contracts are now the norm rather than the shorter-term arrangements some expats used previously.
Spain’s public healthcare system is consistently ranked among the best in the world, and once you’re a resident contributing to Spanish social security, you’re entitled to public healthcare access. Digital Nomad and Non-Lucrative Visa holders typically need private health insurance for the visa application itself — around €50–€100 a month for a healthy adult — even if they later become eligible for public coverage.

Sea freight generally takes four to five weeks including customs clearance. Air freight is quicker, typically within a week, and suits smaller shipments better.
Yes, as long as your employer is based outside Spain and you meet the income threshold, which currently sits around €2,850 a month for a single applicant. Freelancers can also qualify if Spanish clients make up no more than 20% of their work.
It depends on your priorities. Madrid has a slightly stronger overall job market and a more central location; Barcelona offers coastal living and a bigger international tech scene, but generally at a higher cost.
Not for the visa process, but daily life outside major tourist areas and international companies is much smoother with at least basic Spanish, especially for admin tasks like opening a bank account or dealing with the NIE process.
It depends on shipment volume and freight method. Request a personalised quote and we'll give you a clear cost breakdown based on your inventory and destination city.
